Aside from abuse, whether it is abuse of a physical nature such as alcohol or drugs, or abuse of a mental nature as with someone who suffers from low self esteem, living a life of anger is probably the next most damaging thing that we can do to ourselves.
In its truest form, anger will burrow itself into the core of your being and will fester uncontrollably until it ruins (or ends) your life. Anger works at increasing stress, and stress can be a life-ender. Being angry only serves to cloud our decision making abilities by causing us to act out of feelings of hostility.
Anger can manifest itself in more subtle ways but it is still anger none-the-less. Perhaps you are still angry over something that was said or that happened to you long ago. You keep reliving that moment over and over, refreshing it in your memory. As you relive those moments (or that situation) that have made you angry, think about what you are doing. In essence, you are giving them new life! Those moments and situations are actually being reborn into your consciousness. Mentally and physically it is as if the thing that has happened in the past has actually just happened in the present. In order to get on with your life's journey this anger must be released. Remember: What has happened in the past has happened in the past and there is nothing that you, or anyone else, can do to change it.
You certainly would not wish to relive the pain of a broken bone; why would you wish to relive an incident that caused you anger? Many times the anger that we feel comes from the knowledge that we played a part in the circumstances leading up to that anger. Let it go. Being in 'The Now' is the only place that you need to be. The Now is all there is.
Start regaining your power and energy over anger right now by looking at something in the past that had 'set you off' and that you are still holding on to. Ask yourself if you are able to go back into the past and change it
(of course you cannot). Since you are not able to change the past, why do you need to feel that you must carry it to the present and, most likely into the future? Then ask yourself who is being hurt the most by you carrying this burden of anger around. Is it the person (or persons) from the past that caused it? No, for they have probably gone on with their lives not giving you a second thought thus leaving only you to shoulder this heavy load. Do yourself a favor and lay this load down by the side of your path right now. You don't own it any longer and it no longer serves you.
Maintain your sanity as well as your health by living in the 'now'. As you continue to travel your path, open your heart to those things and people that have caused you anger. Each time that you start to wallow in that dark nebulous cloud of your anger remind yourself that was the past, and now is the present. Bit by bit, you will come to realize that whatever may have happened to cause you so much distress in the past actually helped you find yourself where you are today. Stop and consider the amount of energy and power you have given to your anger. As you do this, you will begin to see that you have been wasting precious Universal resources. There is no time like the present to gain control and take back those resources of energy and power.
